Literacy Week at St Paul’s

This term we held our inaugural Literacy Week which saw enthusiastic participation from all areas across the curriculum and our keen and eager pupils as well!

We were delighted to begin our Literacy Week celebrations with a visit from our neighbours in Giggles!  Many thanks to our CPLD pupils for assisting the safe crossing of the Camlough Road.  The children were treated to ‘Story Time’ delivered by our wonderful librarian, Mrs Morgan and English Teacher, Miss McClinton.  The children were treated to four stories and a bit of dancing and singing too!  We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

Each morning every KS3 class were given DEAR Time – Drop Everything and Read!  This meant that across the week our pupils had the opportunity to read for 200 additional minutes!  It was wonderful to see so many departments fully embrace this initiative and there have been calls to make this a more regular event!

Our KS3 Assemblies were awash with Literature throughout Literacy Week as we had the pleasure of our staff reading extracts from a novels to entire year groups.  The Year 8 pupils were treated to being read to by Mrs Morgan, our school librarian, Mrs McKenna, our Literacy Support Assistant and Mr Burns, our Principal!  The genre was humour!  Our Year 9 Assembly theme was Detective Fiction and our readers were Mrs Campbell, Head of English, Ms Fearon, Head of Pastoral Care and Mrs Rafferty, Head of Safe Guarding.  Finally, our Year 10 pupils had the pleasure of listening to Mr McArdle, History Teacher, Mrs Graham, Religion Teacher and Mrs McAnulty, Reprographics Technician reading story openings in the horror genre!  Thank you so much to all our staff for so willingly taking part and modelling their love of reading to our pupils.

Our Year 11 pupils along with their English Teacher, Mrs Campbell and Mrs McKenna had the pleasure of attending Navan Fort and Centre to write poetry as part of Poetry Week. They have since been invited back to attend a presentation evening where two of our pupils Nadine Byrne and Thomas McArevey read aloud their own poems entitled ‘Affair’ and ‘Birth of a Flower’.  Both poems have been published in the Poetry Week Anthology.  Congratulations to Nadine, Thomas and their English Teacher, Mrs Campbell.

Thank you to our Art Department who gave their Year 8 pupils the task of designing book marks around the theme of space!  We were treated to some very creative work!

Here a just a few of our Daily Competition winners!  Well done for correctly guessing our daily riddle or word puzzle and thank you to all our pupils who took part!

A huge word of thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make Literacy Week a success, particularly The English Department and Literacy Team and to all our staff and pupils who participated in Literacy Week so whole-heartedly!
