Aimee Mackin, Louise Kenny, Anna Carr, Fergal Connolly and Miceal Mc Namee received their Bronze Award.
To achieve an award each student had to complete a personal programme of activities in four sections. These sections are:
- Volunteering – helping someone, your community or the environment.
- Physical – becoming fitter through sport, dance or fitness activities.
- Skills – developing existing talents or trying something new.
- Expedition – planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey – 2 days and 1 night.
In preparation for the expedition the students completed a number of practice and training days. This consisted of Orienteering in Kilbroney Forest Park, Gosford Forest Park and Tollymore Forest Park.
They developed skills in first aid and emergency procedures, an awareness of health and safety issues, navigation and route planning, camp craft equipment and hygiene, cooking, the country code and team building.
The expedition consisted of two days walking in the Mournes and one night camping. On the first day they walked over 14km starting at Spelga Dam and finishing at the campsite in TollymoreForest were they set up their tents, organised their food and cooked their meals. On the second day they walked 12km starting in Tollymore and finishing in DonardPark in Newcastle.
A good range of camping and expedition skills were demonstrated by the whole group throughout completing the distance in good time and sometimes in difficult weather conditions.
Each student kept a log book throughout the award keeping track of all their activities and achievements.
