The Junior Netball team at St Paul’s High School junior netball team had been crowned the Northern Ireland Schools’ Netball Association SELB Junior League Champions 2011.
It is over thirty years since the school has won this prestigious title. The match, which was played at the home of Northern Ireland Netball, Lisburn Racquets Club was keenly contested between St Paul’s, Bessbrook and Cookstown High School.
The first two quarters were fairly evenly matched with the two Goal Attacks, Jacqueline Burns and Colleen Mc Veigh scoring well, but St Paul’s remained slightly ahead at half time. However a position change at the beginning of the third quarter brought Cookstown right back into the game.
In the forth and final quarter of the match St. Paul’s made a positional change of their own in defence. The interceptions and support play by St Paul’s Goal Defence, Anna Carr, Goal Keeper, Dearbhla Wright and Wing Defence, Sarah Mc Cone, proved too much for the Cookstown attack. St Paul’s pulled away to win the match 18-13 with some fine shooting by Kerry Garvey supported by Megan Boyle in Centre and Tara Byrne in Wing Attack.
‘It was a great performance today. The girls have trained hard for this and deserve their victory” said team coach Paula O’Hare-Armstrong, after the match. Mrs O’Hare-Armstrong paid tribute to the hard work and professionalism of her team and looked forward to further success in the near future.
