MacRory Cup Panel 2015/16

Success comes in many different levels and formats. Our beaten finalists three years ago may still describe their experiences as failure but I would totally disagree. Yes it was terribly disappointing to lose to that years Hogan Champions, and this year’s opponents again, St Patrick’s Maghera by one point but the boys succeeded in announcing the success of Oliver Mooney’s ambition of marking St Paul’s High School, Bessbrook as a “GAA School” to Ulster and Ireland alike. As they were reaching the final they were inspiring the next generation of players and we hope that this continues. Reaching this year’s final is a tremendous success for a school that not only is striving to be a nursery for Gaelic Games but also a corner stone for club football in South Armagh in the way that St Patrick’s Maghera has become one of the key ingredients in the successful mix that is South Derry club football, where the only thing that matches local rivalry between teams is the skill and knowledge of the players. I look forward to both teams getting the opportunity to display all that is good about our native games, at a time when many line up to criticise the huge efforts of players and coaches alike. If everyone associated with St Paul’s leaves the Athletic Grounds well pleased with the effort and standard of our boys that will be the real success.

It gives me great pleasure to see this group of players playing on the biggest stage in schools’ football. Having worked with the pupils since they came through the door as sprightly elevn-year olds it is amazing to see the progress they have made in their time at St Paul’s. For many of our Year 14 pupils, a Corn Colmcille final defeat in 2009 was the start of their footballing adventure. Since then they have had many setbacks along the way. Despite these disappointments they have always responded in a positive fashion. These experiences have stood to them in their MacRory campaign this year.

I would like to thank Raff and the players for their hard work and dedication to this and all the other football campaigns over the years. They can be of no doubt that the knowledge, friendships and experiences gained will stand to them long after they leave our school.

Again today we meet our friends, St Patrick’s Maghera. Three finals in four years speaks volumes of the challenge that awaits us. However, I am in no doubt that St Paul’s High School, Bessbrook will embrace this challenge and put on a show befitting of the day.
