In the biggest handball competition in the history of the game, with over 2000 participants from under 33 countries competing, Conal took the 17 and Under One-Wall singles title by beating the United States champion Robert Lee 15-7, 11-15 and 11-6. In the third set tiebreaker Conal led 9-0 and 10-2 but had to dig deep to pick up the decisive winning point.
In the semi final he saw off the Irish and World Four-wall title holder Colin Cregan by beating him 11-2 in a tiebreaker.
In the run up to the last four the hugely talented Conal powered to victory, knocking out Belgians, Italians and home based players in style and dropping only two points in the process.
But it was a tough weekend, and 15minutes after coming off the court as World Singles champion, Conal was back in action in the semi final of the World Doubles championship where he partnered Johnny Woods of O’Neill’s County Tyrone.
The Irish duo defeated two Belgian opponents in the semi final 15-1 and 15-5 before taking on Colin Cregan and Darren Docherty in the Final. And once more the Cullyhanna man and his partner triumphed, winning 15-2 and 15-7 with Conal picking up his second world title in the same afternoon.
One comment
Well done Conal, you are a credit to your family, your school and the Cullyhanna club. What a fantastic achievement but I know the best is yet to come. There are other World titles to be won in the years ahead.
