Our Year 11 pupils recently had the opportunity to attend a fascinating event at PwC in Belfast, as part of Maths Week Ireland celebrations. The day included an engaging lecture from renowned teacher, mathematician, and magician Andrew Jeffrey, who demonstrated the surprising mathematical secrets behind the Rubik’s cube. Andrew also explored square, cube, and triangular number patterns and “coincidences,” bringing algebra alive in a fun and interactive way.
A special highlight of the day was when Shea McMullan won a Rubik’s cube for solving a puzzle in the shortest time. The cube was even signed by Andrew himself, making it a fantastic keepsake!
Following the talk, PwC hosted a tour of their impressive facilities, giving pupils an insight into the professional world of finance, technology, and opportunities within PwC. The pupils were inspired and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, gaining valuable knowledge about both the practical applications of mathematics and potential career paths.
This event was a fantastic addition to our Maths Week celebrations, and we are grateful to the Department of the Economy and PwC for making it possible.
