Unlock Your Superpower: Literacy Week Wrap-Up!

What a fantastic Literacy Week we’ve just had, all centred around the electrifying theme: ‘Reading is my Superpower’! We saw our entire school community – staff and pupils alike – embrace the incredible world of words, with a special spotlight shining on the dynamic and captivating realm of graphic and comic literature.

The energy all week was palpable, especially with the heartfelt and inspiring ‘Reading Champion’ videos shared by staff and older pupils. Seeing and hearing about the books that truly changed lives, opened doors, or simply brought immense joy was the ultimate motivation. We hope these personal tales help our Key Stage 3 pupils feel empowered to find their next great read and discover a book that becomes their personal superpower.

Shining a Spotlight on Literacy

Our calendar was jam-packed with activities designed to celebrate literacy in all its forms:

Daily Wordplay: Each day brought new excitement with conundrums and riddles and focused discussions about ‘Word of the Day’. It was brilliant to see everyone testing their vocabulary and critical thinking skills!

Creative Competitions: Our pupils unleashed their artistic and narrative talents! Year 8 pupils designed their own stunning superheroes, while Year 9 created amazing, original comic strips.

A Lively Debate: Our Year 10 pupils tackled a big question in a heated debate: “Graphic novels are ‘real’ literature.” The passion and thoughtful arguments on both sides truly showcased the depth of literacy and critical thinking our pupils possess.

Drop Everything and Listen: We kicked off each day by making reading truly accessible with our ‘Drop Everything and Listen’ initiative during Period 1. The opportunity to simply sit back and get lost in an audiobook showed everyone that engaging with a great story doesn’t always have to look the same.

Literacy isn’t just about reading words on a page; it’s about unlocking your imagination, building empathy, expanding your world, and communicating your ideas. It is, quite simply, your superpower!

Thank you to everyone who participated. Keep reading, keep exploring, and keep using your superpower every single day!
