St Paul’s Year 9 Soccer – Mid Ulster League Victory!
Due to the poor weekend weather, our fixture against Clounagh Junior High School was switched to Newry City’s ground – a huge thank you to them for accommodating us at such short notice!
The boys made a lightning-fast start, racing to a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes thanks to some outstanding vision and composure from Mark McKevitt, who set up Anthony McGeough for a clinical hat-trick inside 15 minutes.
Playing with freedom and confidence, Donnacha Trainor dominated midfield with crucial interceptions and calm distribution. Out wide, Eoin Bradley dazzled on the right wing with silky skills, creating chances and scoring a well-deserved goal, while on the opposite flank Conor Collins impressed with an assist for Anthony and linked superbly with Mark McKevitt and the ever-impressive Roan McFerran to keep the attacking momentum flowing.
Our defence was rock solid throughout, with Ryan Morgan, James Fearon, Mossy Maguire, and JJ Flynn making key interceptions and restricting Clounagh’s attackers to long-range efforts.
Special mention to James Hollywood in goal, who produced an incredible save destined for the top corner! His kicking was accurate, and his communication with the defence was outstanding. We wish James a speedy recovery from a hand injury sustained after bravely stopping a powerful long-range strike.
Today was a squad effort, and our bench made a big impact:
• Jack McAleavey delivered a superb cut-back cross,
• Shea Vardy performed superbly in a position he’s not so familiar with – showing great adaptability and commitment,
• Issac Keenan showed creativity and finished brilliantly with his left foot after Jack’s assist,
• Ollie White replaced James in goal and demonstrated excellent handling and kicking skills,
• Shane Rice slotted seamlessly into the centre of defence after replacing Mossy, maintaining composure and strength at the back.
But the day belonged to Anthony McGeough, who produced a man-of-the-match performance with FIVE goals – composed, clinical, and unstoppable!
Final Score: St Paul’s 7 – 3 Clounagh JHS
A fantastic team display – well done to all the boys!
A huge thank you to The ITEC Business Park, Newry, who kindly sponsored our new jerseys – the lads played as well as they looked in our fresh kit
