This week, the Minister of Education wrote to all mainstream schools across Northern Ireland requiring engagement with the Education Authority to establish Specialist Provision where appropriate, in response to the continued growth in demand for special educational needs placements.As this system-wide expansion begins, BBC News visited St Paul’s High School to examine Specialist Provision already established within a mainstream setting.St Paul’s has, for many years, invested in high-quality provision for pupils with additional needs. Our Specialist Provision is embedded within the life of the school and designed to ensure that pupils are supported academically, socially and pastorally while remaining fully part of the wider school community.Recognising this established practice, BBC News visited the school to see provision in action and to hear directly from pupils and staff.Our Specialist Provisions Lead, Marion McMahon, was interviewed for an online feature explaining how the model operates in practice and how inclusive education strengthens the entire school community.
The accompanying broadcast package, produced by BBC NI Education Correspondent Robbie Meredith, highlighted the lived experience of pupils who are supported within a structured, nurturing and ambitious learning environment.
The current policy direction reflects a growing system need. At St Paul’s, that work is not new. It is part of our identity and our mission. We believe every young person deserves an education that protects their dignity, recognises their potential and enables them to flourish within their local community.
We are proud of the professionalism of our staff and of the confidence shown by our pupils in representing the school so positively.
