Welcome to the ICT/Digital Technology Department 2017

The ICT/Digital Technology department provides support and courses for students in years 8 to 14.  We try to ensure that students have an understanding of commonly used terminology and procedures, with great emphasis made on the importance of good presentation.

Pupils can stay in school most days to make use of the extensive ICT computer facilities.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3 (Years 8,9 & 10)

Year 8 – 1 x 40 minute period per week

The department introduces new skills in Year 8 in order to develop the pupils’ ability to plan and use ICT effectively in all subject areas.

Year 10

Groups of pupils are extracted from class to experience coding, so that they can make an informed decision when choosing their option subjects for GCSE.

Subject information

ICT is currently changing to include Digital Technology which is now available at GCSE and A Level. OCN NI and Cambridge Technical are vocational courses which will be introduced in September 2017 and they are 100% coursework.

Digital Technology

Digital technology incorporates aspects of computer science and information technology. It explores how we can use technology to create, store, process, analyse and present information in a digital context. This includes computer architecture, networks, web technology, digital media, programming tools and software applications.

The 2015 report Make or Break: The UK’s Digital Future, from the House of Lords Select Committee on Digital Skills, refers to these categories:

  • Digital citizens (37% of the total UK workforce) have the ability
to use digital technology purposefully and confidently to communicate, find
information and purchase goods and services.
  • Digital workers (46% of the workforce) are working at the higher
end of digital skills, with the ability to evaluate, configure and use complex
    digital systems.
These tasks often require programming skills such as scripting.
  • Digital makers (10% of the workforce) need skills sufficient to
build digital technology, typically software development.
