Information about Numeracy Support
National Numeracy states that “Numeracy is an essential skill – and an entitlement – for everyone. Economic success and the wellbeing of people individually are dependent on it. Everyone can improve their everyday Mathematics skills. Numeracy can be learnt. Mathematical understanding is not determined at birth. The removal of the negative attitude towards mathematics and numeracy is fundamental to change.”
The teachers and entire staff of St Paul’s value the central role that numeracy plays in pupils achieving their goals and being able to live lives in which they feel fulfilled. One-to-one and small group numeracy support is provided by our two highly motivated, dedicated and caring Numeracy Support Assistants. The aim of the entire staff is to help each pupil work towards fulfilling their potential by being able to access all areas of the curriculum.
St Paul’s has two Numeracy Support Rooms which are well equipped and cheery with a wide range of colourful and informative display materials and technology to support learning.
Once a pupil has been selected and timetabled a period arranged to attend Numeracy Support the pupil will follow the Catch Up® Numeracy programme which is a structured one-to-one intervention for learners who find numeracy difficult. It enables learners who struggle with numeracy to achieve more than double the progress of typically developing learners. Pupils can also be supported if they have missed a unit of work due to illness.
Negative attitudes are the foremost barrier to making the UK numerate. Removing them – getting rid of mistaken beliefs and the widespread ‘rubbish at maths’ tag – is fundamental to change.
Numeracy is an essential skill – and an entitlement – for everyone. The economic success of the UK and the wellbeing of people individually are dependent on it.
